The Poacher’s Package
find out more...talking points!

Members from Hellgate Hunters and Anglers, Montana Game
Wardens Association, and Ravalli County Fish and Game Association
stand with Sen. Larry Jent and Chief Warden, Jim Kropp.
On Thursday March 22nd, Hellgate Hunters and Anglers headed
to Helena to let the House Fish Wildlife and Parks Committee know "Enough
is Enough." Poaching is a growing problem in Montana, who
will ever forget the Ruth's up in Seeley, and HHA thought it was
about time hunters stood up and addressed this heinous issue. Three
bills from the "Poachers Package were heard including SB 100
which would increase the penalties for illegal outfitting, SB 115
which would make all of the restitution funds collected from poachers
go directly into law enforcement and education, and finally SB
205 which would eliminate the state wide vacancy savings for game
wardens. Simply put: illegal outfitters should pay a heavy price
for their cowardly activities, poachers should pay for poaching
investigations, and enough crazy stuff goes on when a game warden
is in his district, just imagine what happens when there is no
warden. For more information on the "Poachers Package" click
Here. HHA members testified on all three bills. Four members of
the Montana Game Wardens Association, and Dale Burk from Ravalli
County Fish and Game Association, also traveled with HHA.
A big thanks to Bob Beach who drove this motley crew over and
back. The most enjoyable part of the trip were the lively conversations
on the way home no doubt fueled by a little Cold Smoke from the
Kettlehouse. This was our first trip as a group to Helena and we
plan to make this an institution in legislative session to come.
With over half the population of Montana participating in hunting
and/or fishing, it is time our elected officials took notice. |

Weed pull and fence removal.
HHA, in collaboration with the Five Valleys Land Trust, will spend
part of the day removing a ½ mile of fence and pulling houndstongue
along the border of National Wildlife Federation land and the Lolo
National Forest. We will start at the Sawmill Gulch Trailhead and
hike ¾ mile to access the site. From the area we will have
a gorgeous view of the North Hills and the Missoula Valley. The
Bitterroots will be in bloom, too. Volunteers are welcome! Bring
gloves. For more info contact Pelah Hoyt, 546-1471, pelah74@yahoo.com
or Grant Bronk at Five Valleys Land Trust 542-0755.
